Tallwoods graphic designer wins top poster award

A presentation ceremony at NSW Parliament House earlier this week was the perfect venue to showcase the talents of young designers from across the State vying for recognition in a poster and bumper sticker competition.

Included in that talented group of 11 was Tallwoods graphic designer, Shelley Kurtz, who learned she had won the poster section.

The Design Competition, run by Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club (DHBC) invited artists to create bumper stickers and posters with a cycling road safety message.

Bicycle NSW director, David Maywald said posters were the most challenging category, attracting 73 entries.

Most of them easily met the tough brief, which is a credit to the graphic design skills of the entrants, Mr Maywald said.

For the first time there is clarity of communicating the minimum passing distance road rule exemptions, which has been desperately needed for a couple of years.

Shelley received a first prize of $1500.

"Passionate about design, she uses colour to evoke an emotional response from the viewer - which can be very clearly seen in her eye catching poster entry."

A delighted and surprised Shelley said the overall experience had been an incredible opportunity.

"I've had so much support from the local community and it was such a privilege to have Stephen Bromhead attend the presentation," Shelley said.

"I feel very honoured that my design was selected to contribute to road safety across NSW."

Shelley and her fellow award recipients were presented with their prizes by Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance.

The ceremony at Parliament House featured members of parliament, including Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, road safety experts, bicycle groups as well as a dozen talented designers from across the State.
